Koki Nakano. Oceanic Feeling. 2023

Dancer Aimilios Arapoglou.

Directed by Benjamin Seroussi . Choreographed by Damien Jalet

The relationship between the composer and the choreographer began during a performance in the Japanese bay of Ishinomaki, an area particularly damaged by the 2011 tsunami, in collaboration with visual artist Kohei Nawa.

“This particular moment, Koki told me later, inspired his latest album and video, Oceanic Feeling. We worked together to recreate this ambivalent feeling we experienced while performing in Ishinomaki Bay; the ambivalence of water as both a devastating and restorative force." Damien Jalet explains

Kokoroko present their first-ever official music video, a beautiful short film soundtracked by ‘Ewà Inú,’ 'Home’, and 'Age of Ascent’ from the band’s debut album ‘Could We Be More’ [reL: August 2022 on Brownswood Recordings].

The film is directed by the multi-disciplined filmmaker, writer & video artist, Akinola Davies Jr. It re-imagines the music as a soundtrack to a triptych of interconnected stories set in Makoko [sometimes known as the Venice of Africa], a community originally settled by fishermen, excluded from official census records, and under threat of demotion.

Edith Dekyndt, Ombre indigène Part. 2, Ile de la Martinique,

Video projection, 16/9, 34’17”, on a loop. 2014

A flag made of hair was stuck in the ground and filmed on top of rocks on the Diamant coast, in Martinique. There, precisely, on the night of 8 April 1830, a clandestine slave boat transporting a hundred African captives washed up on the rocks before being entirely destroyed.
